Why Seek an Independent Psychological Evaluation
Many veterans find that their claim file does not reflect their actual experiences. In some cases, a Compensation and Pension (C&P) examination may be brief, or the resulting report may not fully capture the information discussed during the appointment.
An independent psychological evaluation provides an opportunity to submit thorough, objective, and clinically supported documentation for consideration in your claim. The evaluation is conducted by a licensed psychologist with C&P examination experience who understands the clinical evidence and documentation the VA reviews when making disability-rating decisions.
This service may be helpful if you are:
Appealing a VA decision: Your claim was denied, and you need additional objective medical evidence or a more detailed clinical rationale that addresses the reasons for the denial.
Claiming a secondary condition: You are seeking service connection for a mental health condition related to an already service-connected physical condition, such as chronic pain, tinnitus, sleep apnea, or traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Filing an initial claim: You need a comprehensive mental health evaluation and a well-reasoned medical opinion addressing whether your condition is connected to military service.
Responding to a VA request for additional evidence: The VA has requested further documentation regarding your diagnosis, functional limitations, symptom severity, or the relationship between your condition and military service.
How the Process Works
Step 1:
Record Review
Schedule your record review online for $500 and securely upload your relevant records. Within five business days, you will receive a determination of whether there is sufficient clinical evidence to proceed with an evaluation for a medical opinion.
Step 2:
Schedule Your Evaluation
If the evidence supports an opinion, you schedule an in-person evaluation. This includes a comprehensive clinical interview regarding your military history and standardized psychological testing.
Step 3:
Analysis
The information from your records, clinical interview, and testing is integrated and evaluated to clarify diagnosis, functional impairment, and the relationship between your condition and military service.
Step 4:
Written Report & Documentation
A written report documenting the findings, diagnosis, functional impairment, and medical nexus opinion is prepared along with any applicable DBQ forms. Your completed documentation is securely delivered within 10–14 business days for submission to the VA.

You still receive written findings explaining the determination and identifying any significant gaps in the available evidence. This helps you understand what is missing and whether additional evidence could change the assessment.

The record review is $500. If you move forward, the comprehensive evaluation, written report, medical nexus opinion, and applicable DBQ documentation are $1,500. The total cost for the complete process is $2,000. Services are private-pay and are not billed to insurance.
