Independent Medical Examinations (Psychological IMEs)

Independent psychological examinations for attorneys, insurers, employers, and other professionals who need an objective assessment of mental health and functional impairment.

When to Request a Psychological IME

Psychological IMEs are appropriate when an independent opinion is needed regarding diagnosis, functional limitations, and the relationship between psychological symptoms and occupational or disability‑related questions. Referrals most often involve:

  • Insurance or disability claims requiring clarification of diagnosis, severity of symptoms, or functional impairment

  • Occupational matters, including fitness‑for‑duty and return‑to‑work evaluations

  • Attorney‑retained examinations in VA disability appeals or other civil matters involving alleged psychological injury

  • Questions about the impact of mental health conditions on day‑to‑day functioning or occupational performance

The goal of an IME is to provide an objective, clinically grounded opinion that directly addresses the referral questions.

The Evaluation Process

Each examination is structured around specific referral questions and conducted in accordance with forensic psychological standards and disability evaluation guidelines. The process typically includes:

  • Review of records provided by the retaining party

  • A comprehensive clinical interview

  • Standardized psychological assessment when clinically indicated

  • Dedicated assessment of response validity and symptom credibility

  • A written report that responds directly to the referral questions and integrates findings from records, interview, and testing

The IME does not establish a therapeutic relationship. Findings and opinions are communicated in a written report to the retaining party, and, when appropriate, may be discussed in consultation or testimony.

Engagement and Fees

Before scheduling an examination:

  • A written engagement agreement is completed

  • Referral questions are clearly defined

  • Relevant records are provided in advance

  • Fee schedule and billing arrangements are confirmed

This structure supports transparency, maintainance of forensic role boundaries, and adherence to ethical and professional standards.
