FMLA, Short-Term, & Long-Term Disability Evaluations for Mental Health
Psychological evaluations and documentation for leave and disability benefits related to mental health conditions.
FMLA Evaluations
FMLA may allow eligible employees to take unpaid, job‑protected leave when a serious mental health condition is interfering with their ability to work. An FMLA evaluation assesses how your symptoms affect work functioning and whether clinical findings support the need for leave. When appropriate, medical certification forms are completed for submission to your employer.
FMLA leave may be used in two primary ways, depending on your symptoms and work limitations. Intermittent or reduced‑schedule FMLA may be appropriate when symptoms flare periodically, interfere with attendance, or require recurring appointments, therapy, or treatment visits. Continuous FMLA may be appropriate when your condition requires an extended, uninterrupted period away from work for stabilization, treatment, or recovery.
Short-Term Disability Evaluations
Short‑term disability provides temporary income replacement when a mental health condition prevents you from working for a limited period of time. Unlike FMLA, which protects your job but is generally unpaid, short‑term disability focuses on wage replacement during a period of functional impairment. This evaluation includes diagnostic clarification, assessment of current functional limitations, and completion of insurer or employer documentation when clinically appropriate.
Long-Term Disability Evaluations
Long‑term disability becomes relevant when symptoms continue beyond the short‑term disability period and still prevent a return to work. These evaluations review diagnosis, treatment history, functional limitations, and prognosis as they relate to sustained work capacity. A structured report can be provided to address the policy’s definition of disability and support the documentation required by your insurer.
